Statewide Diabetes Trainings Announced

The Maryland Department of Health, Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Control is offering a skill-building training series for Maryland evidence- based program providers. The goal of this series is to provide a foundation of skills and competence for all leaders and managers of disease prevention and management programs. Training opportunities are no-cost for attendees and offer certificates of completion or continuing education credit.


Addressing the Social Determinants of Health in Diabetes Prevention and

Management Programs

12 pm - 1 pm ET

Live Webinar


This webinar will review the social determinants of health and explain how a person,

their social network, and their cultural and environmental conditions influence

inequities in diabetes health outcomes. Attendees will review various tools for assessing

a person's social determinants of health and learn how to implement those tools within

the context of an evidence-based program.


National Diabetes Prevention Program- Lifestyle Coach Training

Zoom sessions are held for 4 hours from 9 am - 1 pm


Zoom sessions are held for 4 hours from 12:30 – 4:30 pm


Zoom sessions are held for 90 minutes from 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm


The Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Control is offering virtual lifestyle coach classes

to CDC-recognized lifestyle change programs that offer the National DPP. Only people affiliated

with recognized DPP providers may take any of these lifestyle coach training events. Trainees

must attend every class and complete all self-study work.


Supporting Mental Health in People with Diabetes

1 pm - 3 pm ET

Virtual Workshop


In this workshop, attendees will learn about depression, anxiety, diabetes distress, and

other mental health comorbities that affect people with diabetes. Attendees will learn

how to screen for and assess psychosocial challenges, and how to support evidence-

based program participant mental health through appropriate self-help techniques and

referrals.


Beginner Motivational Interviewing

1 pm - 4 pm ET

Virtual


9 am - 4 pm ET

In-Person*, Central MD


In this multi-day training, participants will learn various MI skills and techniques,

including open-ended questioning, affirmation, reflective listening, summarizing, and

more. The course is taught in a learn-see-do format, enabling participants to practice

their MI skills and gain confidence in implementing those skills in their workplace.


Advanced Motivational Interviewing

1 pm - 4 pm ET

Virtual


9 am - 4 pm ET

In-Person*, Central MD


This multi-day advanced training is for people with a basic knowledge of motivational

interviewing skills and concepts. Attendees of this training will learn how to understand

clients' readiness to change and help clients move towards behavioral change with MI.

The training will provide opportunities to observe and then practice various MI skills and

techniques.


*In-Person training events may be converted to virtual to comply with ongoing public health guidance related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
