Maryland Department of Health seeks public input for federal Rural Health Transformation Program by Sept. 30

The Maryland Department of Health announced that it is seeking innovative projects, ideas and strategies to improve rural health in Maryland as part of the federal Rural Health Transformation Program administered by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). The Department will closely consider submissions as it develops the state’s proposal for the federal funding opportunity.

"Input from our rural communities is crucial for effectively shaping our proposal to address their unique health challenges," said Maryland Health Secretary Dr. Meena Seshamani. "We encourage all Marylanders, especially those living and working in rural areas, to share their ideas and experiences. Together, we can develop a comprehensive approach that meets the needs of our rural health care systems and improves our communities' overall health and well-being."

The Department will host a public webinar on Monday, September 15, at 12:30 p.m. to provide further detail.

How to share your ideas with the Maryland Department of Health:

  • Residents and stakeholders are encouraged to submit their project proposals or ideas using the request for information form available at bit.ly/MdRuralHealth-Input. The Maryland Department of Health will accept submissions until September 30.

  • The Department will also collaborate with local health departments to hold listening sessions to gather additional community insights and recommendations. The mid-shore listening session will be held on Monday, September 29th from 4-6 PM at the Talbot County Health Department in Easton, MD. Register for the Listening Session here.

Input is welcome from all Marylanders and especially rural Marylanders and those who serve them. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Rural residents

  • Community-based organizations

  • Hospitals and health systems

  • Federally qualified health centers and community clinics

  • Health care professionals and networks - from primary care to specialty care

  • Post-acute providers, including skilled nursing and assisted living facilities

CMS has allocated a total of $50 billion to the program over five years.
